Artist's Statement

Photography is an alchemical medium that can create beauty from grit. My work explores the mysterious edge between light and its shadow, between color and its absence, between representation and reality. The camera compresses a stream of light into a single image adding mystery to the incongruous juxtapositions of graffiti in its environs.

My photographic subject is my community; all my current work is shot withing walking distance of my home.

"The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes."
- Marcel Proust

Beyond Krog Street: Urban Portraits

Beyond Krog Street explores the environments of art crimes and urban grit. The show opens June 24th and runs through August 20th at Composition Gallery in Candler Park.

All images are from Little Five Points and the Beltline in Atlanta.

Krog Street Underpass

The Krog Street Underpass has long fascinated me. Built under the railroad tracks in 1912, when Atlanta was freeing itself from grade-level rail crossings, it became a shadowy space that induces fear in many pedestrians and drivers. Graffiti artists and taggers have painted most of its surfaces making it a colorful gallery of underground “art crimes.”

My work in the tunnel explores the interplay of light and movement through time exposures. All images were shot as long exposures of 2 - 30 seconds, which allowed me to create magical images that we cannot generally see because our eyes do not absorb images the way a camera does. These beautiful images retain the tunnel’s edginess while mystifying the viewer.

Prints are available from this series as well as a DVD and Screensaver. See the images here or view a sample video from the DVD.

Visions of Chihuly

Chihuly's work captivated Atlantans during his exhibition in the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. I did several excursions to the exhibit dancing with his works creating surreal images of the glass in the lush habitat of the gardens.

Dancing With Trees

Being a tree hugger who's fascinated with the mystical elements of the gloaming I had a wonderful time creating this series. This series was my first exploration of long handheld exposures. The 'common' plants and treees in my neighborhood have a dreamlike quality as I dance with them with my camera.
