Lake Claire sits on the Gulf side of the Eastern Continental Divide (which the R.R. tracks follow) which separates rivers flowing to the Atlantic from those flowing to the Gulf of Mexico. The entire neighborhood is within the City of Atlanta, in DeKalb County.
Lake Claire was primarily developed between 1910 and 1930, but now mammoth houses are being built, primarily on lots that were previously considered undesirable. No motor boats or jet skis are allowed on Lake Claire, which makes it a pleasant place for family outings.
Lake Claire is home to the Lake Claire Community Land Trust, which is an amazing place built by neighbors. For official information about the neighborhood, visit Lake Claire Neighbors.
Many of Lake Claire's colorful residents settled into the community 20 - 30 years ago when housing prices were cheap, and the neighborhood was redlined after the "white flight" to the suburbs. Banks would not write mortgages, and insurances companies would not write policies. Neighbors organized and founded the B.O.N.D. Community Federal Credit Union in 1972.
Little Five Points, the central commercial district for the B.O.N.D. Community, is still considered a bohemian ghetto, even though the property values and rents have dramatically increased. In the early 70's, two central community businesses were founded that still thrive: Sevananda Natural Foods Cooperative and Charis Books.
Other long term cultural aspects of the area include Radio Free Georgia, WRFG-FM, Horizon Theatre, Seven Stages and the Variety Playhouse. For more about L5P visit Little Five Points web site or L5P.com.
